Precision Shaper surfboard machine - router vs spindle

What is the right style motor to use for your cutter?  We have built machines with routers, air cooled, water cooled and even 5hp ac motor running a 5:1 transmission connected to a 1.5" steel shaft supported by recirc bearings.  With this in mind lets take a look deeper into the application of a surf style milling machine. The force of the cut is only realized if there is a stringer or if you are careless and decide to bury the cutter moving very fast.  So power of the motor matters but not all that much.

Do you need to spin the cutter both clockwise and counter clockwise?

This depends on the cutter style.  I have cut with discs, flutes and grinding style cutters never really needing to spin my cutter opposite. The cuts came out perfect spinning clock wise.

Do you need water to cool your motor?

I learned long ago the more you add to a system the more points of potential failure.  The water filled tubes look cool but this adds more weight, another system to maintain and it buys you nothing when cutting pu/eps foams.

Spindles are less noisy for sure, however are much more expensive then routers, harder to find and are more drama to replace. Most watercooled spindles you will see offered are made in China which can be ok but there have been lots of issues with them.  It depends on the manufacturer and importer to the quality and warranty. The warranty and ir replacement being the issue.

We select our routers based on other industry testing, feedback and results. Industry that is much harsher on components.

On surf style machines we recommend routers. They are easy to find, inexpensive, have great real warranty's due to the fact you can buy them from retailers and they actually last longer then some of the chinese watercooled spindles selling for $800-$1100.  We have customers that have had their router spinning through medium production for 4 years!  They replaced brushes year 2 for $19.

So in closing don't get fooled by someone pitching a product when they don't do research. They simply scramble to find something to be different that they have not tested.   Precision Shaper Systems selects conponents based on facts not false information, sales pitch and uneducated feelings.

Avenger II

Much more robust then the machine made by those that consider us "competition" lol... In fact we do not acknowledge the self titled competition as relevent.  Simply put they don't do their homework, build things that don't work and market components falsely.. Big claims with little factual support.

Here is another Avenger II. (85% complete. Way down south in a land down under!

11 of them exist currently around the globe

Little mighty and her smart motors 5 yrs later

Scovel surfboards Kauai got a hold of a used 10' V8 surfboard shaping machine that had our older smart drive servos. 5 years and 1000's of cuts later she still chews foam perfect at 3 shortboards per hour.  Lol and some claim that the little smart servos can't do it? Lol they just never did their homework.  Designed for specific application and function.  Lol nice work guys

Buying a Machine.

PSVX and PSHW in action
We hope this post can help provide some useful information about what to consider when investing in a machine.

Machines are really a complex compilation of hardware, software and communication.  even the most simple design can become a tangled web of "POF" points of failure.  In my world we deal with constantly changing hardware, Operating system upgrades, new hardware components released in the market, customer demands and competition.

Its important that you select a company that has a substantial satisfied customer base, experience with  multiple hardware to software integration, consistent applicable innovation, growth  and most important "THE ABILITY TO PROVIDE BOTH HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE SUPPORT INCLUDING AN INVENTORY OF COMPONENTS AND SOLID VENDOR RELATIONS." Remember were talking about a machine which needs maintenance and at some point repairs.  I can't emphasize enough the importance of support and selecting a company with professional policies and procedures.  $250,000.00 cnc machines need maintenance and repair, so will your skateboard lol..

So I got your ear? Ok.. Lets talk about the options available,  how they differ and how you may fit into the equation.

There are some really nifty machine designers out there and then there are some real suspect ones.  You really need to do some research. At the same time you really should look at whats the right fit for your immediate and long term goals.

Beware of those with lack of REAL experience. Not only building and supporting a system but dealing with customers. These individuals have suspect policy and usually have little  aptitude to solve the plethora of issues that are possible.

How does Precision Shaper Systems fit into the mix?

We build our machines and software in house to work homogenous together. I designed the drives and mill them here in Seattle.  We offer four different style of machine based on the drive system designed, each leveraging a specific purpose for our customer base. We price our machines fair for what we offer and provide.  We take into account each new customer will need our ongoing support, expect it readily, will need replacement parts and would appreciate  fast help, advice and parts.  We have a established and growing customer base.

In closing realize your not just purchasing a machine your trusting the person or business you select has sound business practice, is ethical, continues to innovate and is profitable so they can keep serving you as time moves on.

Feel free to contact us if you have questions about our products and services.

PS-12

PSV-12
I designed this system as a modular platform capable of 3, 4 and 5 axis milling.   The machine hosts linear guides we developed at Precision Shaper as an alternative to steel rail and bearing blocks.

3 axis 2d milling and engraving

4th axis Lathe Horizontal  attachment

4th axis vertical position turn table

4th Axis rotary head

5 Axis vertical turn table and rotary head

For now true 5 axis software is not easy to acquire.  It is possible but this machine was developed for craftsmen and small business. The machines capability is amazing.  We have hit 6061 Aluminum 3 axis 2d mill mode.  Foams, plastics and soft woods easily achievable in 3,4 and 5 axis Mode

We will be posting more on this machine in the very near future.. You can find more on our FB page

Making Skupboards with our system

We have been building Land Paddle Surf Skates since 2007.. We call them Skupboards.  They were so popular that a major retailer picked them up and distributed them nation wide.  People from all walks of life jumped on board as the SUP craze was growing.. We have developed a system to make custom land paddle boards and will be making it available to company's interested in jumping in this new and exciting pool.  In the near future look for the ability to design a custom land paddle board using our software, send the file into a cutting center and weeks later you receive your custom designed surf skate.. This is possible due to the fact our software is so simple yet powerful.  The board shown is 58.5" Long x 17" wide
